Why Intuitive Art Workshops?

Intuitive art is about so much more than just making a beautiful painting. People ask me all the time about my workshops. Most get the wrong idea right off the bat. Many think it’s a paint sip where I tell you what to paint, you numb out a little with alcohol and then go home with a cookie cutter painting you feel okay about. That’s the opposite of what I do.

In my workshops we aim to get to the guts of who you are. That may mean tearing up paper. It may mean journaling with a large dose of honesty. It may mean spilling your guts to a group of trusted women. I could care less if you go home with a pretty painting, though that’s cool if that happens in the process.

Here’s what my Intuitive Art Workshops are NOT about

❌Perfectionism, Self Judgment, Rejection and Overthinking

I have created a quiz that helps you identify your biggest Sparkle Stopper©- perfectionism, self-judgment, rejection or overthinking. These are the four most common factors that prevent us from living out our dreams, according to my research.

Intuitive Art is the antidote to feeling these feelings, which prevents us from living our most fulfilling and satisfying life. The root cause of all of these fears is the fear that we are not good enough. Through intuitive art making we learn to trust ourselves and trust the great spirit moving through us, so that faith overcomes all of our fears.

Want to know your Sparkle Stopper©? Take the quiz here.

❌Not for Making a Pretty Picture

This isn’t a paint and sip. We’re here to connect you to the tissues of your inner being. I want you to remember how powerful and capable and beautiful and worthy you are. Unfortunately a lot of times traditional art techniques make us feel the opposite. As far as I'm concerned, the less art experience you have, the better. I want you to feel every emotion. I want you to feel every mark you make on the page. If it turns out ugly, good. You faced your fear of perfectionism.

❌ Not for Realism or technical art making techniques

We don’t do realistic art in my workshops. We focus on staying in the moment and connecting to our souls. Realistic art puts the focus on something outside of ourselves. It puts the focus on techniques and strategy and logical thinking. My workshops are the opposite. I want you to dive into your craziest, wildlest, most creative side of yourself and let that freak flag fly high, if only for the duration of the event.

❌Not for kids

Most people want to bring their kids to these events. While kids are cool and all, this isn’t for them. It’s for you. I find that many people hide behind their kids, especially at these events. I want you to find a sitter and leave your kids at home so you can face yourself without any distractions.

Another reason I don’t work with kids is because kids make art at school fairly often. They probably make art at home too. When was the last time your kid made some art? Great. When was the last time you made art?

Here’s what my intuitive art workshops ARE about:

Connecting with your inner child

While I intentionally don’t work with children, I am very adamant about working with adults who want to reconnect with their own inner child. In psychology, the inner child is the part of you from childhood that may have inadvertently gotten wounded and therefore hidden away as a modern day survival technique. For example, growing up a school teacher may have told you that you weren’t creative and you weren’t an artist, and being a young, impressionable mind, you believed that teacher and gave up on art for good. You’re now an adult who doesn't go near creative projects because you don’t want to feel the sting of rejection you felt as a child in that moment when your teacher told you that you didn't have what it takes.

Inner child work is the process of reconnecting with these childhood memories through imagination or meditation and giving your younger self the love or affirmation you needed back then, in order to increase your self worth and heal your inner wounds. This approach heals the memory as well as the present version of yourself.

My intuitive art workshops are designed to help you tap into your natural sense of creativity, curiosity and play - many of which we often lose in adulthood unfortunately.

Processing deep emotions

Life is hard. We all go through pain, shame, grief and fear. Taking just a few moments to utilize pen and paper as a safe space to process these intense emotions can provide enormous relief to the mind-body and spirit. I like to think of paper as a non-judgmental friend who can hold anything and everything you want to dump on it.

Dream up Big Dreams for Yourself

Dream work is my favorite work to engage with others at my art workshops. So often we limit ourselves to how big we can dream and how much difference we can make in the world. We get stuck in “Realistic expectations” and so we make small and insignificant goals for ourselves that we quickly forget about and then we feel like a failure and we berate ourselves before repeating the cycle.

My school of thought is that the universe (or God) wants you to be the brightest and best version of yourself you can be. This same source usually drops in grand dreams for how to do that, but our logical mind typically swats these away almost before they are even received. By taking a few moments in an intentional group setting we can allow ourselves the space to receive the dreams, the callings of our soul that we are here to live out. Then we can begin to receive these dreams into the reality of our being. THIS is how we create a life we love.

Mindfulness through focusing on the process

We talk a lot about how you feel in the process. Does scribbling make you feel anxious or out of control? How do  your hands feel in wet paint? What does the act of crumpling paper release inside of you? These are the focuses that pull you into your five senses and into the moment you’re creating during a workshop.

Process over product or end result

Again, we never focus on making pretty pictures or having any predetermined outcome for our paintings. Intuitive art is more of a journey than a destination. Sometimes we sit down and have a huge release emotionally and end up with an ugly painting. That’s okay. The process was the point, not the outcome.

Other times we sit down and dream up something beautiful. We trust the flow and we let go of our own ideas and the painting turns out fantastic! That’s a gleeful side effect of being in the moment, but not always our goal.

My job is to connect you to something under the surface. My job is to help you take off the mask of perfectionism, self judgement, rejection and overthinking so that you can connect to the pure essence of who you truly are.

Connecting with your soul

When we let our walls down and allow ourselves to just be with ourselves, we are able to dive under the surface layer we cling so tightly to. We’re able to connect more deeply with the essence of being human and being alive, which is to connect with your soul. Your true being. Rather than the roles you play in society or the masks you don for your own protection.

Underneath all of those layers is the inner child, the real you, who came to this planet for a reason, for purpose, for a fully expanded life in the eyes of God and self. My workshops are designed to help you connect to that piece inside yourself, no matter how far down you’ve buried her.

As you can see, Intuitive Art workshops are not for those who want to numb out and prove their worth with art skills. It’s for people who want to dive deep, get uncomfortable and try their hand at extreme honesty and imperfection.
