On Choosing Wellness or.. We Are Creators ✨
I had a chat with my 27 year old cousin over Easter weekend. He was describing to me his back pain and sciatic, which surprised me because he’s always been very fit and very active. In fact, he’s still very fit. He’s just not as active as he used to be. What happened?
Well he got a great job driving a tow truck and so he now sits for 8+ hours a day. Sound familiar?
So many of us have believed the cultural lie that with age come aches and pains automatically. While it is true, our body does age - it isn’t necessarily true that we must suffer and call it normal.
It seems socially we are quick to take the prescribed pills and wait for a day in the future when we will inevitably have to get surgery.
Then as we continue to age, we get the surgery and then use it as an excuse to stay inactive.
This is so backwards to how thousands of years of people have done it, and no surprise we’re in much worse health than our ancestors.
Wellness is a choice.
It’s something we actively choose again and again and again, Every day and throughout the day.
You choose wellness when you opt for an apple instead of a cookie. 🍎
You choose wellness when you go for a walk instead of sitting straight on the couch. 🚶♀️
You choose wellness when you sit still for 5 minutes before you start the day. 🧘
Wellness then, is the culmination of many very small decisions over time.
Our modern lifestyles mostly include sitting behind a screen for 8+ hours at work and then coming home, mentally exhausted, and sitting behind usually at least one, often two more screens for a few hours before bed.
Then we sleep restlessly and awake feeling stiff and do it all over again.
It’s no wonder our bodies are stiff, aching and crying out.
Yet with just a few minutes of intentional movement each morning we can drastically change our lives.
Have you heard of the Butterfly Effect? The essential concept coined by Edward Lorenz states that everything is connected and the flap of butterfly wings in one part of the world can cause a tornado in another part of the world. Seemingly insignificant actions can create drastic change over time.
To apply it here, studies have shown if you do one positive thing for your health everyday, you’ll likely begin doing another positive thing, and another, and see a vibrant ripple effect across your life in a few short weeks.
So, what’s one small thing you can choose toward creating your own wellness today?
I’ll help you out with a few ideas:
Go for a walk 🚶♀️
Meditate for just 5 minutes
Put your phone down and sit outside 🌱
Sign up for a yoga class 🧘
Go to the gym 🏋️
Pick up an instrument and play 🎸🪘
Doodle 🖌️
Let me know what you choose. I’m cheering you on. ✨
Remember, you are a creator. Choose to create your own wellness.
